37 feet…continued

By Emily Spirek on June 9, 2010 at 4:40 pm in General

Here’s an update on the progress of the new office. If you compare the pictures to Elyssa’s post below, you’ll see quite the transformation.

Elyssa and I will be doing some paintings this weekend for some of the decor, and we’re in the process of buying the rest. Still have a ways to go, but it’s definitely an improvement from the last post. If anyone has some awesome paintings they want us to hang, we’d love to take a look!

We’ll be having an open house next month for everyone to see our new space. Although it was mentioned in the last post, let me remind you: our office grew from 185 sq ft to 1100 sq ft. So yes, we want to show it off.

Why Acrobat is better for printing and our story behind it

By Emily Spirek on April 19, 2010 at 10:57 am in General

Adobe Acrobat vs. Preview (on a Mac)

Yesterday, our power glitched while Tim was in a meeting, and when he came in the office to make a copy, we discovered the printer was fried. In all attempts to turn it back on, we still failed.

Fried Printer

So, even though we had been researching color laser printers the past few months, we didn’t realize we’d be forced into buying one.

We made our trip to Staples and came back with an HP Color Laserjet. So pretty…

Brand New Color Laser printer

Anyway, now we are testing the printer to see if it’s worth keeping, and we noticed a lot of detail was missing in the printouts (when printing from Tim’s computer). Of course, our first thought is to blame the printer and consider getting a refund, but then Elyssa (one of the designers) printed from her computer, and it looked perfect in detail and color.

After more experimentation, I finally came up with the solution: different applications were being used to view and print the PDFs.

You can see the comparison below:

Adobe Acrobat PDF - screen view (left)

Preview PDF - screen view (right)

screen-shot-2010-04-16-at-101835-am

Notice the detail in the calculator is missing in Preview.

Adobe Acrobat printout (left)

Preview printout (right)

The printouts show even more problems when using Preview:

1. Detail in the calculator is still missing
2. Colors are muddy
3. Lines in text and images are jagged
4. The entire document is larger

Preview’s default is to scale the images so it fits the screen. This throws off the proportion of the document and leads to other problems.

Through more experimentation, we found that Adobe Acrobat takes longer for the documents to print, but rightfully so. It obviously pays closer attention to detail and prints more accurately. I’ve yet to research the technical details as to why Acrobat is better, but so far we just have the proof.

Along with all of the other features included, like: password encrypting, print production features, electronic fillable forms, etc. (in Acrobat Professional), I’ve finally decided to switch to Acrobat as my default PDF viewer. It may take longer in some cases, but accuracy in printing makes it all worth it.

“Mobile Meals in Edmond, Oklahoma is a non-profit charitable organization, and has operated independently since 1974. It provides hot, nourishing meals to elderly and disabled persons who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. The meals and daily contact by caring volunteers allow frail, homebound persons to remain in their own homes, where they want to be. Other people need just a little help to recover from an illness or hospitalization.”

Visit Edmond Mobile Meals’ site to learn more about the organization and how you can help. Thanks again to Teresa, and we hope you are enjoying your website!

Video solution to our new, hard-to-find office

By Emily Spirek on December 22, 2009 at 2:39 pm in General, Video

Our new office location is infamous for stumping even GPS navigation systems. We decided a video might help people find the place and maybe give incentive to bring us gifts. Whether or not our video helps, we had fun doing it. As a disclaimer, it is SLIGHTLY humorous…and nerdy.

Email Etiquette Part 1: Keepin’ It Real

By Emily Spirek on December 11, 2009 at 8:04 pm in Email, General

istock_000003853460xsmallIn the midst of hundreds of emails each week (thousands for some), I think it’s fairly common to disregard the need for personable communication and correct email behavior. There is a laundry list of things to remember, so I thought I would break it up into a series of blog entries. Hopefully working on it one step at a time will improve your email etiquette.

Without the help of facial expressions, body language or tone of voice, emails can easily be misinterpreted and possibly cost you some business in the end. Remember, people you are communicating with are real humans too. I know, crazy. But our emails don’t always reflect this. Here a few things to remember:

  1. Ask about their life: A simple, “How was your weekend?” will do.
  2. Personally address your emails: We like to see our names and talk about ourselves.
  3. Always say please and thank you: This one seems easy, but the email takes on a whole new meaning with polite words. I’ll get into the sandwich method later.
  4. Don’t always use email: Yes I know this post is about email, but if we’re talking about the more personable approach, it would be the phone. It’s not always necessary, but make sure to use both.

From personal experience, I remember an email from one of our clients, Deidra McCall with Paint-A-Smile. I had briefly mentioned to her that my birthday was coming up in a few weeks and not only did she remember, but she sent me a happy birthday email.

I thought she was wishing me a happy birthday and would immediately follow with business talk, but the email was completely non-work related. I really appreciated her effort and she definitely moved up on my list of favorite clients.

Anyway, this just scratches the surface of email do’s and don’ts. See part two for more tips.
